I can't use the existing hinges because not only are they painted over and nasty, their mortises in many cases aren't even good. However I search on YT, I can't find a video doing doing what I need to. I recall seeing Tom Silva do this on an episode of TOH but for the life of me I can't find that segment. The part where I have the question is, do I install the hinges on the door then mark the jamb and mortise for them or install on the jamb first then mark and mortise the door? For those with the experience, which is the better and/or easier way? So as it goes, I'll be installing them in the existing jambs.ĭue to the existing hinges being square and the new ones being radiused as well as some being too big for the hinges in them now, I'll be putting dowels in the screw holes and using a Dutchman over the hinge mortises, as well as the strike plate and latch hole. and all the dust and shit that goes with it. I realize the ideal way to install it is in a new jamb, but that isn't practical due to the mess it'll make and with a very active three year old in the house, I can't have doors missing for a few days while I work pulling off the old casing, cutting out the new jamb, installing the new one, new casing, etc. Did the first one and I just need to finish sand it and trim to fit when ready. I've got only 7, possibly 9 (those two at a later date) to make. I am building my own doors in a frame and panel style out of poplar and MDF. My house has garbage hollow core slab doors, and while I should have ripped them out and installed new prehung doors years ago, other things got in the way.
